France has enjoyed a run of remarkable successes in the first decade of this century. This resulted in at least two, perhaps three, vintages of the century. The latest one – 2010 – is poised to be another one of the greatest ever, possibly surpassing the three greatest vintages in this decade.
Question in most wine enthusiasts’ minds is “are these vintages really that great or is it just another marketing hype to take money out of our pockets?” Recent tastings have already shown that the wines from these great vintages are not only clean and robust they are well balanced and poised to improve with age. In short, they have lived up to their reputation and doubts about their quality have all been dispelled. The questions in wine shoppers’ minds now are:
1. If the quality of the vintage is so high and consistent, will less famous wines
perform so well that they become excellent value for our money?
2. Although these are great vintages, their wines have different characteristics, no doubt reflecting the nuances of the climates of each year. Matching these against our individual taste preferences is an essential exercise to help us determine which vintage we would like to buy and cellar.

Yats Restaurant is organizing this wine tasting at its Magnum Room Wine Lounge to address these concerns. We plan to provide participants with an unbiased platform on which to form an educated opinion. This is done by offering wine drinkers a chance to taste wines from these vintages side by side. Comparative wine tasting is one of the best and most efficient ways for wine drinkers to determine their individual palate preferences. This is not about which is better or worse. This is about knowing our own preferences and possibly venturing a little bit outside out comfort zones in order to explore other possibilities available there.

Group 1: From the legendary vintage of 2005
2005 swept wine lovers around the world off their feet with rave reviews from just about every respectable and even the lesser known wine critics around. Heralded as the perfect year with the friendliest of weather conditions throughout the growing season, this was one of those rare vintages that nature did most of the work in making great wines.
Group 2: From the much heralded vintage of 2009
When reports came out that 2009 was another amazing vintage in France, wine collectors were at first skeptical. Most wine enthusiasts wonder if it was possible that one decade can offer two such great vintages. This was a hotter vintage than 2005 but the essential perfection in balance is present in the wines. With so much power inside, these wines are expected to age beautifully for an extraordinary length of time.
Group 3: Underrated vintages in the 00 decade

Group 3: Underrated vintages in the 00 decade
The good thing about great vintages is that one can hardly go wrong in selecting what wines to buy. The bad thing, although not necessary bad for shoppers, is that the years before and immediately after those great vintages tend to be neglected and often passed over. Sometimes this creates an excellent opportunity to pick up good wines at very attractive prices.
Group 4: From the second half of the decade of the 90s
The decade of the 90s produced wines that straddle two styles – the more neo-classics invented in the 80s and the modern and technically advanced wines of the 2000s. There was considerable amount of experimenting resulting in myriad of styles and sometimes, less predictable results.

Group 5: From the first half of the decade of the 90s
A lot of the wines from the early 90s are now coming of age and are showing well. Some of the more classic wines with firmer structure might still require a few more years to soften up. A lot depend on personal preferences; some like their wines more matured than others. Almost all the wines are drinking beautifully now. Tasting these wines should give wine collectors a good glimpse into how their collection of 05’s and 09’s for example should perform after 10 years.
Light snacks will be served.
